Vienna university application calendar: 2026/27 winter semester
Each university in Vienna has its own application calendar and its own admission system. The dates below are based on the universities' official announcements for the 2026/27 winter semester; it is best to start preparing at least 6 months before you apply.
Application periods by university
For applicants from outside the EU/EEA (third-country nationals), application periods generally close earlier than for EU citizens. The announced dates for the 2026/27 winter semester are:
- Universität Wien: 22 June – 3 August 2026
- TU Wien: 15 July 2026 (deadline for third-country applicants)
- WU Wien (Business & Economics – English-taught): 2 March – 19 May 2026
- BOKU University: 1 March – 31 July 2026
Working backwards from the deadline
The application deadline is the date by which preparation must be finished, not the date you start. Document translation, apostille and booking a language exam slot usually take the most time.
- 6–9 months before: choosing a programme, checking admission requirements, planning your language level
- 4–6 months before: diploma, transcript, YKS document, translation and apostille
- 3–4 months before: language exam (German/English) and enrolling in any required preparation course
- During the application period: online application, fee payment, document upload
- After admission: residence permit application, accommodation, insurance
A common mistake: applying to only one university
Since admission requirements vary widely between programmes, moving forward with two or three options that fit your profile increases your chance of admission. Considering a public university and a Fachhochschule option in the same field together is usually the most balanced plan.
