Accommodation in Vienna: comparing dorms, WGs and apartments

Accommodation is the largest item in a Vienna budget and the resource that runs out fastest at the start of each semester. Researching your options before you receive your admission letter gives you an advantage.

Student dormitories

In institutional dormitories, rooms are usually furnished, bills are included in the rent, and the application process is straightforward. Spots fill quickly at the start of each semester, so applying early is important.

Shared flats (WG)

A WG is a model of renting a room in a flat close to the city centre. It is flexible in terms of budget and the fastest way to build a social circle, but interviews with the landlord and flatmates are conducted in German or English.

Apartments and studios

For those who want to live alone, there are furnished short- and long-term apartment options. This is the most expensive option, but it can also be used as a temporary solution in the first months.

Choosing a location relative to your university

Since Vienna's public transport is strong, being within walking distance of campus is not essential. With the annual youth card, getting around the city becomes a fixed cost, so you can strike a balance between rent and commute time.
